Notes from the field: The vital role of trust and agency – building capabilities and improved learning pathways

Notes from the field shares the latest insights from Cycle 3 of the Power of Recognising More action research study.

This cycle brought together leading practitioners to examine what’s working in practice, the barriers that persist, and what’s needed to create real and lasting change. It shares their combined insights in a series of three notes which highlight the importance of learner agency, the need for trusted ways to recognise complex capabilities, and how broader recognition can help young people make more informed decisions about their pathways and futures.

The notes build on the foundations of Cycles 1 and 2 which reinforced what we’ve long known – getting young people to the school gate is only the first step. We must ensure that once they arrive, they are in an environment that nurtures their wellbeing, develops a wide range of capabilities alongside foundational skills, and empowers them with the confidence to shape their future.
